The northern part of the city houses most of the historical sites, including Umm Salal Mohammed, a fairly large village overshadowed by the ruins of a 19th-century fort. The Grand Mosque with its numerous domes and the Abu Bakir al-Siddiq Mosque are particularly noteworthy. On the west coast, there are beautiful beaches at Umm Bab, Dukhan, and Salwah near the Saudi border. The southern region is a landscape of sand dunes and beaches, providing opportunities for pearl hunting and a range of watersports. If you ever grow weary of city life, the rest of Qatar is practically at your doorstep, offering magnificent scenery and intriguing historical attractions for those with a sense of adventure.
