De legendarische "Roze Stad, in de zesde eeuw was de hoofdstad van het oude Nabatean koninkrijk in het zuiden van het Koninkrijk Jordanië. Vanwege zijn uitstekende ruïnes bekend, werd Petra erkend als een World Heritage Site door UNESCO in 1985. Het koninkrijk werd geabsorbeerd door het Romeinse Rijk in AD 106 en de Romeinen bleef de stad uit te breiden. Na de verovering van het Midden-Oosten door Saladin in 1189, Petra werd verlaten. de ruïnes bleef verborgen voor het grootste deel van de wereld tot de Zwitserse ontdekkingsreiziger Johann Ludwig Burckhardt , vermomd als een Arabisch geleerde, infiltreerde hij de stad bezet door bedoeïenen in 1812 werd de site opgenomen in de film van Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones en de laatste kruistocht in 1989 en werd in juli 2007 verkozen tot een van de nieuwe Seven Wonders of the World.
