Swiss Alps Switzerland

The mountainous region of Switzerland, commonly known as the Swiss Alps, is a significant natural landmark of the country. Along with the Swiss Plateau and the Swiss section of the Jura Mountains, it forms one of the three primary physiographic regions of the country. The Swiss Alps span both the Western and Eastern Alps, covering an area often referred to as the Central Alps. While the northern ranges from the Bernese Alps to the Appenzell Alps are entirely within Switzerland, the southern ranges from the Mont Blanc massif to the Bernina massif are shared with other countries such as France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. The Swiss Alps include nearly all the highest peaks of the Alps, such as Dufourspitze (4,634 m), the Dom (4,545 m), the Liskamm (4,527 m), the Weisshorn (4,506 m), and the Matterhorn (4,478 m). Other major summits can be found in this list of mountains in Switzerland. Since the Middle Ages, crossing the Alps has played a significant role in history. The area north of St Gotthard Pass became the heart of the Swiss Confederacy in the early 14th century.
