About the destination: The Riviera Maya is a tourism and resort district in Mexico. It straddles the coastal Highway along the Caribbean coastline of the state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula. This district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum. Target areas for urbanisation include the towns and villages of: Puerto Morelos, the Riviera Maya), Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Chemuyil, and Tulum. A major attraction throughout the Riviera Maya are coastal and reef aquatic activities dependent on the coastal water and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System which begins near Cancun and continues along the whole length of the Riviera Maya continuing southward to Guatemala. This barrier reef system is the second longest in the world. Activities at the most visited locations include jet-skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming in cenotes, swimming with dolphins, zip-lining, horse riding, sailing, and guided jungle tours. Archaeology is also a big tourist draw in the area, including the popular archaeological sites operated by the Instituto Nacional de Archaeological such as Tulum on the coast, and Chichen Itza and Coba located some distance inland.

3. Mexico City
Stay
About the destination: Mexico City is a vibrant metropolis and cosmopolitan city located on a plain in the central highlands at an altitude of 2,286 metres. It's the capital city of Mexico, and the largest city in North America by population. Spanish administrative buildings and private houses in the city centre have replaced the temples of ancient Mexico, resulting in a blend of both old and new architectural styles. Located at the Plaza de la Constitución, in the Historic Downtown, the Catedral Metropolitana is the country's largest cathedral and its construction took 250 years. The lower section is quite plain but the upper section is of Baroque and Neo-Classical design. It contains many altars and the main altar is made from solid gold. An elevator ascends the Torre Latino America, an earthquake-proof tower that was built in 1958. A viewing platform provides a fantastic panoramic view that includes the Palacio de Bellas Artes, with its orange and yellow dome, and the Juárez Monument. Of course a visit to Mexico DF would be incomplete without the Mariachi music. Head to the Plaza Garibaldi in the evening, and enjoy the Mariachi music. Located 50 kilometres from Mexico D.F. are the ancient remains of Teotihuacan that was once a centre of trade, art and ritual ceremonies. Its Sun Pyramid is one of the greatest building achievements of ancient times and it is considered by one of the most important cultural centres of mankind. The city's fascinating history is reflected in both its art and architecture with age old charm, Indian roots and elegant buildings. For surprises, sights and history galore, Mexico D.F. definitely deserves a visit.
