Hvar Island, Croatia

Hvar Island Croatia

Hvar is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, just off the Dalmatian coast, lying between the islands of Brač, Vis and Korčula. Unlike many of its neighbours, Hvar has a large fertile coastal plain and fresh water springs. Its hillsides are covered with pine forests, while the cultivated areas feature vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and fragrant lavender fields. The island enjoys a mild winter climate and warm, sunny summers with many hours of sunshine. The main Town Square in Hvar is one of the most beautiful and largest in Croatia. Above the town, a historic fortress crowns the hill, with defensive walls that once protected parts of the old settlement. At one end of the square stands the Cathedral of St Stephen, built in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its four‑storey bell tower becomes more ornate with each level. The cathedral itself was constructed on the site of an earlier church destroyed during Turkish attacks. Nearby, at the Neolithic archaeological site of Grapčeva špilja close to Hvar Town, distinctive ceramics decorated with red, yellow, brown and white spiral motifs have been discovered. Hvar offers crystal‑clear blue sea, lush green hills, clean air and traditional stone architecture. As the sun sets, a walk up the narrow old lanes leading from Hvar’s main square rewards visitors with another higher street lined with charming houses and views over the town and bay – an atmospheric spot that should not be missed.
