Mainz, the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, lies on the banks of the Rhine and directly opposite the mouth of the River Main, making it one of Germany’s important river ports. The city offers several points of interest. Its most notable claim to fame is that it is where Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable-type printing press. Today, Mainz still plays a major role in the media landscape, as it is home to ZDF, the second most important television channel in Germany. Although Mainz suffered heavy damage during the Second World War, much of its old town has been preserved. The historic centre is particularly striking for its houses built with red stone. The Johannes Gutenberg University, founded in 1477, is located close to the city centre. The campus includes not only lecture halls and classrooms, but also student accommodation, bars and restaurants. Mainz is a truly remarkable tourist destination, and any traveller who chooses to visit will not be disappointed, as the city is lively and active both day and night.
