Peio Italy

Peio is a municipality in Trentino, in the northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located about 50 kilometres (31 miles) north-west of Trento. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,892 and covered an area of 160.3 square kilometres (61.9 square miles). Peio borders the following municipalities: Martell, Valfurva, Rabbi, Ponte di Legno, Vermiglio, Ossana and Pellizzano. Until the end of the First World War (1918), Peio – like the whole region – was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; the border between the Empire and the Kingdom of Italy ran through the mountains above Peio, where a harsh war was fought among cliffs, snow and glaciers. Even today, thanks to the melting of glaciers, pieces of military equipment can still be found. A small museum in Peio displays these items, together with filmed records of those battles. Until recent decades, Peio was a mountain hamlet that survived on agriculture and cattle rearing. Since 1970, rapid development has transformed Peio into a ski resort and a centre dedicated to wellness. The Peio valley is rich in mineral springs, which are now used not only for bottled water production but also for therapeutic purposes. Another important factor in Peio’s tourism development is its location within Stelvio National Park, a vast mountain area where plant and animal biodiversity is strictly protected. Easy walks and more demanding trekking routes allow visitors to explore valleys and woodlands from Passo del Tonale to Ortles.
