St. Julian’s, Malta

St. Julian’s Malta

St. Julian’s, on Malta’s northeastern coast, is one of the island’s liveliest and most adaptable spots. Once a small fishing village, it’s grown into a busy seaside resort that still keeps bits of local character. Spinola Bay, with its traditional luzzu boats and pastel-coloured houses, has that old-Malta feel, especially at sunset when the promenade fills with people out for a stroll and some sea air. Paceville, on the other hand, is Malta’s nightlife hub, crammed with bars, clubs, lounges and late-night takeaways. You’ll find everything from laid-back pubs and rooftop cocktail bars to big clubs that go on until the early hours. It’s a big draw for younger visitors and anyone keen on Malta’s party scene, but even if you’re not into late nights, it’s worth a look to soak up the atmosphere and try the wide range of international food. St. Julian’s also suits a quieter seaside break. The shore is mostly rocky rather than sandy, but there are plenty of lidos, flat sunbathing platforms and small coves where you can swim in clear, turquoise water. Balluta Bay and St. George’s Bay are popular for a quick swim, water sports or just lying out in the sun looking over the open sea. A long, well-kept promenade runs between St. Julian’s and neighbouring Sliema, ideal for a morning jog, an evening walk or wandering from café to café. Because it’s so central and well connected by bus, St. Julian’s makes a handy base for seeing the rest of Malta. It’s easy to head off on day trips to Valletta, Mdina or the Three Cities, and lots of boat trips to Comino and Gozo leave from nearby harbours. After a day of exploring, you can come back to a town that offers both quiet corners and a lively social buzz, making St. Julian’s a good fit for many different types of traveller.
