Hanover, Germany

Hanover Germany

The city of Hanover, known for major fairs like the computer show CeBIT, lies on the banks of the River Leine and is the capital of Lower Saxony. Today, Hanover is recognised as an industrial and economic centre. Destroyed by two-thirds in 1945, Hanover offers only a limited number of genuinely historical sites. The Old Town, or Altstadt, was partially rebuilt in a medieval style. Only the Herrenhausen Gardens, laid out in the 18th century, preserve the baroque splendour of this princely city. Even so, the Altstadt is ideal for a relaxed break, where you can stroll along narrow streets and visit the Marktkirche and the Old Town Hall. One convenient way to see most of the city’s sights is to follow the red line marked with numbered attractions. Along this so-called Red Route, visitors will see Kröpcke Square, the New Town Hall, the opera house, the Sprengel Museum, the Kestner Museum and the Museum of Lower Saxony. Hanover has many attractions, an international atmosphere, and a wide range of events and exhibitions to suit all ages and tastes. The city is lively all year round, from the exuberant spring festival and the spectacular Fireworks Festival to the romantic Christmas markets.
