Gladbeck Germany

The name ‘Gladbeck’ comes from Low German, originally spoken in the area around the town. ‘Glad’ means smooth and ‘beck’ means brook. Gladbeck is in the northern part of the Ruhr Area and is part of the so‑called Emscher zone, where mining began later than in other towns in the region. Gladbeck is mainly surrounded by Bottrop, Gelsenkirchen and Dorsten, and by Essen to the south.
